Text for Cantata 51
Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen

Original German Text

English Translation

1. ARIA (Sopran)

Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen!
Was der Himmel und die Welt
an Geschöpfen in sich hält,
müßen dessen Ruhm erhöhen,
und wir wollen unserm Gott
gleichfalls itzt ein Opfer bringen,
daß er uns in Kreuz und Not
allezeit hat beigestanden.

Exalt God in all lands!
Whatever creatures be found
in the sky or the world
must lift up their praise
and we likewise will now bring
our God an offering
for he has always stood beside us
through cross and agony.

2. REZITATIV (Sopran)

Wir beten zu dem Tempel an,
da Gottes Ehre wohnet,
da dessen Treu, so täglich neu,
mit lauter Segen lohnet.
Wir preisen, was er an uns hat getan.
Muß gleich der schwache Mund
von seinen Wundern lallen,
so kann ein schlechtes Lob ihm dennoch wohlgefallen.

We worship at the temple
where God’s glory resides,
where his devotion, renewed each day,
rewards vast blessing.
We praise what he has done for us.
Even if a feeble mouth prattles on
about his wonders,
so, may meager praise still be pleasing to him.

3. ARIA (Sopran)

Höchster, mache deine Güte
ferner alle Morgen neu.
So soll vor die Vatertreu
auch ein dankbares Gemüte
durch ein frommes Leben weisen,
daß wir deine Kinder heißen.

Most High, renew your goodness
further every morning.
Thus, before such fatherly devotion
the thankful soul too
shall demonstrate a pious life,
that we be called your children.

4. CHORAL

Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren
Gott, Vater, Sohn, heiligem Geist!
Der woll in uns vermehren,
was er uns aus Gnaden verheißt,
daß wir ihm fest vertrauen,
gänzlich uns laßn auf ihn,
von Herzen auf ihn bauen,
daß unsr Herz, Mut und Sinn
ihm festiglich anhangen;
drauf singen wir zur Stund:
Amen, wir werdns erlangen,
glaubn wir zu aller Stund.

Laud and praise with honor be
to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!
Who will increase in us
what he promised us out of grace,
that we do firmly trust him,
completely relying on him,
building upon him from the heart,
that our heart, valor and thought
firmly espouse to him;
to this we sing this hour:
Amen, we will attain this,
we believe in every hour.

5. FINALE

Alleluja!

Alleluia!
