Wer sucht die Pracht,
wer wünscht den Glanz,
der ewig bleibet,
der keine eitle Macht und keine Zeit vertreibet,
der muß schon hier verlangen,
damit er dort kann ewig prangen. |
Whoever seeks glory,
whoever wishes for splendor
which will last forever,
which no vain might nor time can expel,
he must already establish it here
so that he can shine in eternity there. |

Seele, suchst du dein Vergnügen,
so hast du dereinst zu siegen,
so erwähle, was dich schmückt.
Ja, ich suche mein Vergnügen,
ach, ich hoffe, einst zu siegen,
so erwähle, was mich schmückt.
Fort mit dem, was sich verlieret,
was auf kurze Zeit nur zieret,
was dich ewiglich beglückt. |
Soul, if you seek your pleasure
then you first have to overcome
so elect what will adorn you.
Yes, I seek my pleasure,
oh, I hope, first to overcome,
so I will elect what adorns me.
Away with that which is forfeitable,
that which after just a moment can adorn,
is what will delight you eternally. |

Umsonst ist hier die Kunst, nur Schatten,
was man liebet,
die Lust, der sich das Herz ergiebet,
verfliehet als ein Dunst,
nur das,was unsre Seele schmückt,
das ist und bleibt und macht uns recht beglückt. |
Art is here in vain, simply shadows,
what one might adore,
passion, which yields to the heart
evaporates like a haze,
only that which decorates our soul
is that, which remains and makes us truly happy. |

Felsenfest muß der Grund im Herzen stehen,
daß wenn alles wird vergehen,
uns der Glaube nicht verläßt.
Laß das Ungewitter stürmen,
Gottes Hand wird uns beschirmen
und so stehn wir felsenfest. |
The reason must stand in the heart as firm as stone,
so that when all else passes away
faith does not leave us,
Let the tempest rage,
God’s hand will shield us
and thus we stand as firm as stone. |

So ist denn das dein einziges Bemühn,
o Seele, jenes Wohl auf dich zu ziehn,
du wirst so in der Ewigkeit erblühn! |
So this is then your singular task,
O soul, draw this wellbeing upon yourself,
you will thus bloom in eternity! |

Entfernet euch Vergänglichkeiten,
ich liebe jene Seltenheiten,
die mir der Himmel selbst verspricht,
entlieht ihr unbeständgen Schätze,
woran ich ewig mich ergötze,
ist einer größern Ehre wert. |
Distance yourself mortality,
I love every curiousity
which heaven itself promises me,
gather up, your impermanent treasures,
that, with which I eternally regale myself,
is worthy of greater honor. |

O, schöner Schluß, O Wohl!
der nie mißlungen,
wenn man zu dem Genuß,
zu höchsten sich also geschwungen,
wo unser Herze lacht,
in unvergänglicher, in steter Pracht,
wo ewiges Vergnugen wohnet
und Gott dein Treu belohnet. |
O, beautiful goal, O wellbeing!
which never fails,
when one, to his delight,
is thus compelled to that most high,
where our heart can laugh
in perpetual, in constant glory,
where eternal delight abides
and God rewards your devotion. |

Der Himmel selbst zerfällt,
ein Glanz kann nicht bestehen der

The sky itself gives way,
a beam cannot subsist which
having received this message then lets it disappear.
Only that alone, which will adorn us in heaven,
will thus be unmoved
and gleam with constant shine
upon that which adorns us in heaven,
it gleams with constant shine. |
