Text for Cantata 218
Gott der Hoffnung erfülle euch

Original German Text

English Translation

1. Chor

Gott der Hoffnung erfülle euch
mit allerlei Freude und Friede im Glauben,
daß ihr völlige Hoffnung habt,
durch die Kraft des heiligen Geistes.

May the God of hope fill you
with every sort of joy and peace, in faith
that you have complete hope
through the power of the Holy Spirit.

2. Aria (Alt)

Glaub' und Hoffnung, Trost und Stärke
sind des heil'gen Geistes Werke,
Fried' und Freude, Licht und Liebe
rühren her aus seinem Triebe.
Alles, was wir Gutes haben,
sind des heil'gen Geistes Gaben.

Faith and hope, comfort and might
are works of the Holy Spirit,
peace and joy, light and love
arise at his compelling.
Anything good which we possess
is a gift from the Holy Spirit.

3. Rezitativ (SATB)

TENOR
Weil wir nichts ohne dich vermögen,
so gib uns deinen Segen,
Gott heil'ger Geist,
daß unser Christentum vor dich ein Preis und Ruhm,
vor uns ein heilig Wesen sei
und sich in guten Werken übe.

BAß
Im Glauben mach' uns stark und brünstig in der Liebe;
in Nöten steh' uns bei, in Schwachheit
gib uns Kraft, im Kämpfen mach' uns heldenhaft.

SOPRAN

so sprich in unsers Herzens Grunde
denselben reichlich ein,
und laß nicht ab uns zuzuschrei'n ein Abba, lieber Vater!
Und drück' uns dann zu unsrer Ruh'
die müden Augen sanfte zu.

TENOR
Since we are capable of nothing without you,
do grant us your blessing,
God Holy Spirit,
that our Christendom in praise and glory of you,
make us sacred beings
practicing good acts.

BASS
By faith make us strong and fervent in love;
stand beside us in need, and in weakness
grant us might, in battle make us heroic.

SOPRANO
If the world provokes us with sin,
then let us perceive fear and reserve.
If it is to our pleasing, then set us up again,
and you will direct us along the even path
our entire course of life.

ALTO
Sire our minds, that they not strive for the love
of earthly things, but aspire heavenward.
When in the final hour all comforts vanish,
then tell our heart’s foundation the same profusely,
and let us not stop crying out
an “Abba, dear Father!”
And then gently press closed our weary eyes,
unto our rest.

4. Aria (Sopran)

Ihr Christen, wollt ihr selig sein?
So weihet eure Herzen ein,
daß mit dem Vater und dem Sohne
der heil'ge Geist darinnen wohne.
Wer Gottes Wort im Glauben hält,
der hat ein Herz, das Gott gefällt.

You Christians, do you want to be blest?
The consecrate your hearts
that the Holy Spirit along with the Father
and the Son, reside therein.
Whoever keeps the word of God in faith
has a heart that pleases God.

5. Chor

Komm, Gott Schöpfer, heiliger Geist,
besuch' das Herz der Menschen dein,
mit Gnaden sie füll', wie du weißt,
daß dein Geschöpf vorhin sein.

Come, God creator, Holy Spirit,
visit the heart of these your people,
fill it with grace, so you know,
that it ever be your creation.
