1. CHOR

Blast Lärmen, ihr Feinde! verstärket die Macht,
mein Heldenmut bleibt unbewegt.
Blitzt, donnert und kracht,
zerschmettert die Mauren, verbrennet die Wälder,
verwüstet aus Rachgier die Äcker und Felder,
und kämpft bis Roß und Mann erlegt.

Sound the alarm, you foes! bolster your might
my hero’s valor remains undaunted.
Strike lightning, thunder and crash,
shatter the walls, burn the woods,
in vengeance devastate acres and fields
and battle until both steed and man are slain.

2. REZITATIV

TAPFERKEIT
Ja, ja!
Nunmehro sind die Zeiten da,
daß ich den Völkern kann entdecken,
ich sei, wie in der alten Zeit,
auch noch jetzt der Vermessenheit
ein offenbares Schrecken.
Man kann ja sehn,
was nur bisher durch meine Stärke
dort in Darmatien [sic] geschehn,

VALOR
Yes, yes!
Hence the time has arrived
in which I can expose to the peoples,
that I am, as in ancient times,
even now an obvious menace
to conjecture.
One can of course see
what recently, through my power
occurred there in Sarmatia (Poland),
how I newly persisted,
and that insolent foe,
before he even knew,
was chased away in shame.
I have, however often he threatened,
never shied before his arrogance,
now, also to this most worthy of the German heroes
I place the crown upon his princely head,
and will, as far as I am allowed
report to the people’s integrity the land’s verdict.

3. ARIA

TAPFERKEIT
Nun blühet das Vergnügen,
nachdem August den Thron besteigt,
da sich an Ihm nur Großmut zeigt,
die Feinde zu besiegen:
so blühet das Vergnügen.

VALOR
Now blooms contentment,
once August mounts the throne,
for He has only shown magnanimity
in conquering the foe:
so blooms contentment.

4. REZITATIV

GERECHTIGKEIT
Und wie? hat mein August,
da er nach Polen kommen,
so Kron, als Szepter angenommen?
O! was vor seltne Lust
erreget dies bei Jung und Alten,
weil ihnen längst bekannt,
daß Er das Land
durch meinen Beistand wird erhalten.

JUSTICE
And how? has my August
since he comes to Poland,
accepted the crown as well as scepter?
O! what rare delight
excites both young and old,
for they long ago recognized
that He would preserve this land
with my assistance.

5. ARIA

GERECHTIGKEIT
Herr! Dein Eifer vor die Rechte
macht, daß jeder Deiner Knechte
Schutz und Hülfe finden kann.
Wird die Unschuld künftig klagen,
werd ich sagen:
Geh, fleh Deinen Schutzgott an.

JUSTICE
Sir! your zeal for justice
makes each of Your servants
able to find protection and aid.
Should the innocent subsequently lament,
then I will say:
Go, implore Your Patron God.

6. REZITATIV

TAPFERKEIT? GNADE?
Der Untertan ist nun erfreut,
da ihm Dein hohes Krönungsfest
ein frohes Vivat! rufen läßt;

VALOR? GRACE?
Your subject is now gladdened,
as Your grand coronation calls out to him
a merry “long life!”;
his heart burns with most sincere yearning
to accept law and justice from You alone.

7. ARIA

GNADE
Laßt uns zum Augusto fliehen,
denn Sein eifriges Bemühen,
jedes Herz an Sich zu ziehen,
gründet sich auf unser Wohl.
Kommt! Laßt uns den Szepter küßen,
hört ihr nicht? Er läßt uns wissen,
daß wir sollen Schutz genüssen,
der beständig dauren soll.

GRACE
Let us take flight unto August
for His zealous striving
draws each heart to Himself,
grounded in our wellbeing.
Come! Let us kiss the scepter,
do you not hear? He lets us know
that we shall enjoy protection
which will endure forever.

8. REZITATIV

GNADE

PALLAS
Wohlan! so will ich mich
auch jetzt zu Deinem Throne wagen,
und dir in Untertänigkeit,
bei dieser höchstbeglückten Zeit,
des Geistes treue Regung sagen;
doch, ich will lieber schweigen.

GNADE UND PALLAS
Nein, nein!/Doch nein!
er wird sich gegen
dich,/mich,
Als wie ein Vater, zeigen.

GRACE
The elector’s cap will today be laid aside
and as my prince also
dons crown and purple robe,
so can we hope, with sound reason,
the path to greater grace lies open before us.

ATHENA
Now then! so I too want
to now venture before Your throne,
and before You in humility,
at this most fortunate time
speak out of spirited loyal emotion;
but, I prefer to remain silent.

GRACE AND ATHENA
No, no!/Indeed not!
he will reveal himself
to you/to me
as though a father.

9. ARIA

PALLAS
Großer König unsrer Zeit!
Laß doch Deine Tapferkeit
mich hinfort beschützen,
und die Musen ruhig sitzen.
Unser Herz bleibt Dir geweiht,
großer König unsrer Zeit!
Drum laß Deine Tapferkeit
mich hinfort beschützen,
und die Musen ruhig sitzen.

ATHENA
Great King of our age!
Let indeed Your valor
henceforth protect me,
and let my muses dwell in peace.
Our heart remains consecrated to You
great King of our age!
Thus let Your valor
henceforth protect me,
and my muses dwell in peace.

10. REZITATIV

PALLAS
Großmächtigster August!
laß Dir dies ehrfurchtsvolle Bitten
nur nicht zuwider sein,
die Ruhe, so die Musen lieben,
hat mich hierzu vor diesmal angetrieben.

TAPFERKEIT
So höre an, was mir Dein Herr,
dir zu berichten, kund getan:
Er schützet Deine Ruh,
und sagt Dir Friede zu,
nur sollt du Ihm auch Seinen Willen
in allen suchen zu erfüllen.

PALLAS
Mein König! mein August!
Der Pierinnen Freud und Lust.

TAPFERKEIT
Dein König, dein August.

PALLAS
Du Schutzherr meiner Ruh!

TAPFERKEIT
Der Schutzherr deiner Ruh.

PALLAS
Du sollt in der noch späten Zeit,
Dir die Dein Name prophezeiht,
von mir verehret werden.

TAPFERKEIT
Dein König, dein August,
der Pierinnen Freud und Lust,
der Schutzherr deiner Ruh,
soll auch in der noch spätern Zeit,
die Ihm Sein Nahme prophezeiht,
von dir verehret werden.
So lebe nunmehr ohne Schrecken,
ich werde selbst den Helicon bedecken.

ATHENA
Almighty August!
let this reverent request
just not be contrary to You,
the peace, so loved by muses,
has compelled me this time to it.

VALOR
So listen to what Your Lord
relayed me to report to you:
He protects Your repose
and pronounces peace for You,
but you should also seek
to fulfill His will in all things.

ATHENA
My king! My August!
The Pierians’ joy and desire.

VALOR
Your king, your August.

ATHENA
You patron of my peace!

VALOR
The patron of your peace!

ATHENA
You shall in times yet to come
be venerated by me
as those who prophesized your name did.

VALOR
Your king, your August,
the Pierians’ joy and desire,
the patron of your peace,
shall also in times yet to come
be venerated by you
as those who prophesized his name did.
So live hereafter without fear
I will myself shield Helicon.*

11. ARIA

TAPFERKEIT
So lebet ihr Musen! auf Helicons Höhen,
im Segen und Ruh.
Kommt! eilet herzu,
seht, hier grünt euer Wohlergehen.

VALOR
So live you muses! upon Helicon’s heights,
in bliss and peace.
Come! hasten hither,
behold, here thrives your wellbeing.

12. REZITATIV

GERECHTIGKEIT, GNADE UND PALLAS
Ihr Söhne, laßt doch künftig lesen,
was euch Augustus Guts gethan,
damit die Nachwelt sehen kan,
sein Ruhm sei Kronen wert gewesen.

GERECHTIGKEIT
Dein König wird, ohn Ansehn der Personen,
Fleiß und Gelehrsamkeit belohnen.

GNADE
So viele Tropfen heilig Öl
bei seiner Salbung heute fließen;
so viele Huld soll auch dein Musenchor genüssen.

PALLAS
Nun trifft es ein,
was ich schon längst gedacht:
Augustus kan mit Recht ein Gott der Erden sein.

GERECHTIGKEIT UND GNADE
Wir bleiben billig bei dir stehn,
und wollen, gleichwie du, des Königs Ruhm erhöhn.

JUSTIC, GRACE AND ATHENA
You sons, let in the future be read
what good August has done for you
whereby posterity can view
how his glory was worthily crowned.

JUSTICE
Your king will, without review of the person,
reward diligence and learning.

GRACE
As many drops of sacred oil
flow today at his anointing;
so much favor shall your choir of muses also savor.

ATHENA
So now is reached
what I have already long imagined:
August can rightly be a god upon earth.

JUSTICE AND GRACE
We simply remain standing beside you,
and just like you, will exalt the king’s fame.

13. ARIA

GERECHTIGKEIT
Schwarze Raben
werden eher Schwäne haben,
eh August die Rechte bricht;

GNADE

JUSTICE
Black ravens will
sooner bear swans
before August breaks with the law;

GRACE
and the bright sunlight
sooner abandon this world
than August loathes leniency.

JUSTICE AND GRACE
To chastise zeal
to sanctify love
immortalize the hero,
and make him a marvel for the world to come.

14. REZITATIV

PALLAS
Wohlan! wir wollen uns mit viel Ergötzen
auf meines Berges Spitzen setzen;
ein jeder Musensohn
nimmt euch mit tausend Freuden auf.
Ihr Winde! fliegelt euren Lauf,
ihr sollt, was jetzt der Sachsen Musen singen,
vor unsers Königs Throne bringen.

ATHENA
Now then! we will with much feasting
be seated upon the peak of my mountain;
each and every muse’s son
take in a thousand joys.
You winds! fly along your course,
you shall bring before our king’s throne
what the muses now sing to the Saxons.

15. CHOR

Vivat! August, August, Vivat!
bis der Bau der Erden fällt.
Herr! Dein königlich Erhöhen
laß Dein Hohes Wohlergehen
in erwünschtem Wachsthum stehen,

Long life! August, August, long life!
until the earth’s structure collapses.
Sir! May your regal elevation
allow Your great prosperity
to exist in desired increase
thereupon it is well throughout realm and land.

*Peak in central Greece, sacred site favored by the gods and goddesses, especially the muses.
