Text for Cantata 172
Erschallet, ihr Lieder, erklinget, ihr Saiten!

Original German Text

English Translation

1. CHOR

Erschallet, ihr Lieder,
erklinget, ihr Saiten!
O seligste Zeiten!
Gott will sich die Seelen
zu Tempeln bereiten.

Resound, you songs,
resonate, you strings!
O most blessed of times!
God himself will prepare
our souls for his temple.

2. REZITATIV (Baß)

Wer mich liebet,
der wird mein Wort halten,
und mein Vater wird ihn lieben,
und wir werden zu ihm kommen
und Wohnung bei ihm machen.

Whoever loves me
will keep my word,
and my Father will love him,
and we will come to him
and take up a dwelling within him.

3. ARIA (Baß)

Heiligste Dreieinigkeit,
großer Gott der Ehren,
komm doch in der Gnadenzeit
bei uns einzukehren,
komm doch in die Herzenshütten,
sind sie gleich gering und klein,
komm doch, komm und laß dich doch erbitten,
komm und kehre bei uns ein,
komm und laß dich doch erbitten,
komm und ziehe bei uns ein!

Most-Holy Trinity,
great God of glory,
do come in this time of grace
and occupy us,
do come into the hearts’ tents,
though they be both humble and small,
do come, come and be so invited,
come and settle within us,
come and be so invited,
come and move into us!

4. ARIA (Tenor)

O Seelenparadies,
das Gottes Geist durchwehet,
der bei der Schöpfung blies,
der Geist, der nie vergehet;
auf, auf, bereite dich,
der Tröster nahet sich.

O souls’ paradise
through which God's Spirit blows
as it blew during creation,
the Spirit who never disperses;
arise, arise, make yourself ready,
the comforter draws near.

5. ARIA (Sopran, Alt)

SEELE
Komm, laß mich nicht länger warten,
komm, du sanfter Himmelswind,
wehe durch den Herzensgarten!

HEILIGER GEIST
Ich erquicke dich, mein Kind.

SEELE
Liebste Liebe, die so süße,
aller Wollust Überfluß!
ich vergeh, wenn ich dich miße.

HEILIGER GEIST
Nimm von mir den Gnadenkuß.

SEELE
Sei im Glauben mir willkommen,
höchste Liebe, komm herein!
Du hast mir das Herz genommen.

HEILIGER GEIST
Ich bin dein, und du bist mein!
Du bist mein, und ich bin dein!

SOUL
Come, let me wait no longer,
come, you gentle, heavenly wind,
waft through the heart's garden!

HOLY SPIRIT
I restore you, my child.

SOUL
Dearest love, ever so sweet,
profusion of every desire!
I will elapse should miss you.

HOLY SPIRIT
Receive from me the kiss of grace.

SOUL
Be welcomed in me by faith,
my greatest love, enter in!
You have overtaken my heart.

HOLY SPIRIT
I am yours, and you are mine!
You are mine and I am yours!

6. CHORAL

Von Gott kömmt mir ein Freudenschein,
wenn du mit deinen Äugelein
mich freundlich tust anblicken.
O Herr Jesu, mein trautes Gut,
dein Wort, dein Geist, dein Leib und Blut
mich innerlich erquicken.
Nimm mich
freundlich
in dein Arme, daß ich warme werd von Gnaden;
auf dein Wort komm ich geladen.

From God a ray of joy appears for me
when you, with your dear eyes,
do kindly gaze upon me.
O Lord Jesus, my trusty good
your word, your Spirit, your body and blood
restore me from within.
Take me
kindly
into your arms, that I be warmed by grace;
I come summoned by your word.

7. CHOR

Erschallet, ihr Lieder,
erklinget, ihr Saiten!
O seligste Zeiten!
Gott will sich die Seelen
zu Tempeln bereiten.

Resound, you songs,
resonate, you strings!
O most blessed of times!
God himself will prepare
our souls for his temple.
