Aria T

Aria [Tenor]

Violino I/II, Continuo

Herr, so weit die Wolken gehen,
Gehet deines Namens Ruhm.
Alles, was die Lippen rührt,
Alles, was noch Odem führt,
Wird dich in der Macht erhöhen.

Lord, as far as the clouds go,
goes the fame of your name.
Everything, that moves lips,
everything , that draws breath
will exalt you in your power.

Recitativo A

Recitative [Alto]

Continuo

Du süßer Jesus-Name du,
In dir ist meine Ruh,
Du bist mein Trost auf Erden,
Wie kann denn mir
Im Kreuze bange werden?
Du bist mein festes Schloss und mein Panier,
Da lauf ich hin,
Wenn ich verfolget bin.
Du bist mein Leben und mein Licht,
Mein Ehre, meine Zuversicht,
Mein Beistand in Gefahr
Und mein Geschenk zum neuen Jahr.

You, sweet name of Jesus, you,
in you is my peace,
you are my comfort on earth,
how can I then
be anxious in my affliction?
You are my strong castle and my banner
where I run for refuge
when I am persecuted.
You are my life and my light,
my honour, my reassurance,
my help in trouble
and my present for the new year.

Aria S

Violino solo, Continuo

Jesus soll mein erstes Wort
In dem neuen Jahre heißen.
Fort und fort
Lacht sein Nam in meinem Munde,
Und in meiner letzten Stunde
Ist Jesus auch mein letztes Wort.

Jesus should be my first word
spoken in the new year.
Continually
his name laughs in my mouth,
and in my last hours
Jesus is also my last word.

Recitativo B

Recitative [Bass]

Oboe I/II, Continuo

Oboe I/II, Continuo

Und da du, Herr, gesagt:
Bittet nur in meinem Namen,
So ist alles Ja! Und Amen!
So flehen wir,
Du Heiland aller Welt, zu dir:
Verstoß uns ferner nicht,
Behüt uns dieses Jahr
Für Feuer, Pest und Kriegsgefahr!
Laß uns dein Wort, das helle Licht,
Noch rein und lauter brennen;
Gib unsrer Obrigkeit
Und dem gesamten Lande
Dein Heil des Segens zu erkennen;
Gib allezeit
Glück und Heil zu allem Stande.
Wir bitten, Herr, in deinem Namen,
Sprich: ja! Darzu, sprich: Amen, Amen!

And as you, Lord, have said:
only ask in my name,
then is everything 'Yes!' and 'Amen!'
Therefore we make our entreaties,
you saviour of all the world, to you:
do not cast us away,
protect us during this year
from fire, disease and the dangers of war!
Let your word, the bright light
burn pure and clear for us.
Grant that our government
and the whole country
may acknowledge the salvation of your blessing;
grant at all times
good fortune and salvation to all classes.
We ask this, Lord, in your name,
say :'Yes!' to this, say: 'Amen, Amen!'

Chorale [S, A, T, B]

Tromba I-III, Timpani, Oboe I/II e Violino I col Soprano, Violino II coll'Alto, Viola col Tenore, Continuo

Laß uns das Jahr vollbringen
Zu Lob dem Namen dein,
Dass wir demselben singen
In der Christen Gemein.
Wollst uns das Leben fristen
Durch dein allmächtig Hand,
Erhalt dein liebe Christen
Und unser Vaterland!
Dein Segen zu uns wende,
Gib Fried an allem Ende,
Gib unverfälscht im Lande
Dein seligmachend Wort,
Die Teufel mach zuschanden
Hier und an allem Ort!

Let us complete the year
with praise for your name,
so that we may sing of this
in the Christian congregation.
If you want us to eke out our existence
through your almighty hand,
support your dear Christians
and our fatherland!
Send your blessing upon us,
grant peace everywhere,
grant unadulterated in the country
your word that brings blessing,
destroy the devils
here and in all places!

Alternatively:

Dein ist allein die Ehre,
Dein ist allein der Ruhm;
Geduld im Kreuz uns lehre,
Regier all unser Tun,
Bis wir fröhlich abscheiden
Ins ewig Himmelreich,
Zu wahrem Fried und Freude,
Den Heilgen Gottes gleich.
Indes machs mit uns allen
Nach deinem Wohlgefallen:
Solchs singet heut ohn Scherzen
Die christgläubige Schar
Und wünscht mit Mund und Herzen
Ein seligs neues Jahr.

Yours alone is the honour,
yours alone is the praise;
teach us patience in [bearing the] cross,
govern all our actions,
until we joyfully depart
to the eternal kingdom of heaven,
to true peace and joy,
like the saints of God.
Meanwhile deal with all of us
according to your pleasure:
thus sings today without jests

the flock of those who believe in Christ
and wishes with voice and heart for
a blessed new
year.
