Text for Cantata 167
Ihr Menschen, rühmet Gottes Liebe

Original German Text

English Translation

1. ARIA (Tenor)

Ihr Menschen, rühmet Gottes Liebe
und preiset seine Gütigkeit!
Lobt ihn aus reinem Herzenstriebe,
daß er uns zu bestimmter Zeit
das Horn des Heils, den Weg zum Leben
an Jesu, seinen Sohn, gegeben.

You people, extol the love of God
and praise his goodliness!
Laud him out of pure heart's desire,
for he at this precise moment
has granted us the horn of salvation,
the way unto life in Jesus his Son.

2. REZITATIV (Alt)

Gelobet sei der Herr Gott Israel,
der sich in Gnaden zu uns wendet
und seinen Sohn vom hohen Himmelsthron
zum Welterlöser sendet.
Erst stellte sich Johannes ein
und mußte Weg und Bahn dem Heiland zubereiten;
hierauf kam Jesus selber an,
die armen Menschenkinder
und die verlornen Sünder
mit Gnad und Liebe zu erfreun
und sie zum Himmelreich
in wahrer Buß zu leiten.

Praise be the Lord God of Israel,
who turns to us in grace,
and sends his Son from the exalted throne
of heaven as Redeemer of the world.
First John (the Baptist) appeared
having to prepare the way and path for the Savior;
then, Jesus himself arrived
to gladden the poor children of humanity
and forlorned sinners,
with grace and love
and to lead them unto the kingdom of heaven
in true penitence.

3. ARIA (Sopran, Alt)

Gottes Wort, das trüget nicht,
es geschieht, was er verspricht.
Was er in dem Paradies
und vor so viel hundert Jahren
denen Vätern schon verhieß,
haben wir gottlob erfahren.

God's word does not deceive,
whatever he promises occurs.
That which he in paradise
so many hundreds of years ago
once promised our forbears,
we have, praise God, encountered.

4. REZITATIV (Baß)

Des Weibes Samen kam,
nachdem die Zeit erfüllet;
der Segen, den Gott Abraham,
dem Glaubensheld, versprochen,
ist wie der Glanz der Sonne angebrochen,
und unser Kummer ist gestillet.
Ein stummer Zacharias preist
mit lauter Stimme Gott vor seine Wundertat,
die er dem Volk erzeiget hat.
Bedenkt, ihr Christen, auch, was Gott an euch getan
und stimmet ihm ein Loblied an!

Of a woman’s seed he came,
according to the time of fulfillment;
the blessing which God promised Abraham,
the champion of faith,
has dawned like the brilliance of the sun,
and our troubles are stilled.
A mute Zachariah praised God
with a loud voice at his wondrous deed
which he revealed to the people.
Ponder too, you Christians, what God has done
for you and voice to him a song of praise!

5. CHORAL

Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren
Gott Vater, Sohn, heiligem Geist!
der woll in uns vermehren,
was er uns aus Genad verheißt,
daß wir ihm fest vertrauen,
gänzlich verlaßn auf ihn,
von Herzen auf ihn bauen,
daß unsr Herz, Mut und Sinn
ihm festiglich anhangen;
darauf singn wir zur Stund:
Amen, wir werdns erlangen,
Gläubn wir aus Herzens Grund.

Laud and praise with honor be
to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!
who will increase in us
what he promised us out of grace,
that we do firmly trust him,
completely relying on him,
building upon him from the heart,
that our heart, valor and thoughts
firmly espouse to him;
to this we sing this hour:
Amen, we will attain this,
we believe from our heart’s foundation.
