Text for Cantata 143
Lobe den Herren, meine Seele

Original German Text

English Translation

1. CHOR

Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele.

Praise the Lord, my soul.

2. CHORAL (Sopran)

Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ,
wahr' Mensch und wahrer Gott,
ein starker Nothelfer du bist
im Leben und im Tod;
drum wir allein
im Namen dein
zu deinem Vater schreien.

You, Prince of Peace, Lord Jesus Christ,
true human and true God,
you are a mighty helper in need
in life and in death;
thus we alone
in your name
cry unto the Father.

3. REZITATIV (Tenor)

Wohl dem, des Hülfe der Gott Jakob ist,
des Hoffnung auf dem Herrn, seinem Gotte, stehet.

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope rests upon the Lord his God.

4. ARIA (Tenor)

Tausendfaches Unglück, Schrecken,
Trübsal, Angst und schneller Tod,
Völker, die das Land bedecken,
Sorgen und sonst noch mehr Not
sehen andre Länder zwar,
aber wir ein Segensjahr.

Thousandfold misfortune, terror
tribulation, fear and swift death,
people, who blanket the land,
worries and even more agony yet
are seen of course in other lands,
but we [see] a year of blessing.

5. ARIA (Baß)

Der Herr ist König ewiglich,
dein Gott, Zion, für und für.

The Lord is king eternal,
your God, Zion, forever and ever.

6. ARIA (Tenor)

Jesu, Retter deiner Herde,
bleibe ferner unser Hort,
daß dies Jahr uns glücklich werde,
halte Wacht an jedem Ort.
Führ, o Jesu, deine Schar
bis zu jenem neuen Jahr.

Jesus, rescuer of your fold
remain our refuge further,
that this year might be prosperous for us,
keep watch over each locale.
Lead, O Jesus, your flock
forth into this new year.

7. CHOR

Halleluja.
Gedenk, Herr, jetzund an dein Amt,
daß du ein Friedfürst bist,
und hilf uns gnädig allesamt
jetzt und zu dieser Frist;
laß uns hinfort
dein göttlich Wort
im Fried noch länger hallen.

Halleluiah.
Consider, Lord, now your office,
that you are a Prince of Peace,
and mercifully aid us all
now at this proper time;
let henceforth in us
your divine word
in peace resound yet longer.
