Coro

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Corno col Soprano, Oboe d'amore I/II, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ,
Wahr' Mensch und wahrer Gott,
Ein starker Nothelfer du bist
Im Leben und im Tod.
Drum wir allein
Im Namen dein
Zu deinem Vater schreien.

You prince of peace, Lord Jesus Christ,
true man and true God,
you are a strong helper in distress,
in life and in death.
Therefore we only
in your name
cry to your father.

Aria A

Aria [Alto]

Oboe d'amore solo, Continuo

Ach, unaussprechlich ist die Not
Und des erzürnten Richters Dräuen!
Kaum, dass wir noch in dieser Angst,
Wie du, o Jesu, selbst verlangst,
Zu Gott in deinem Namen schreien.

Ah, unspeakable is our distress
and the threatening of the enraged judge!
Scarcely, as a result are we still able in this anguish -
as you yourself, o Jesus, demand that we should -
to call to God in your name.

Recitativo T

Recitative [Tenor]

Continuo

Gedenke doch,
O Jesu, dass du noch
Ein Fürst des Friedens heißest!
Aus Liebe wolltest du dein Wort uns senden.
Will sich dein Herz auf einmal von uns wenden,
Der du so große Hülfe sonst beweisest?

Remember then,
o Jesus, that you still
are called a prince of peace!
From love you wanted to send your Word to us.
Does your heart all at once want to turn away from us,
you who formerly showed us such great help?

Aria (Terzetto) S T B

Aria (Terzetto) [Soprano, Tenor, Bass]

Continuo

Ach, wir bekennen unsre Schuld
Und bitten nichts als um Geduld
Und um dein unermesslich Lieben.
Es brach ja dein erbarmend Herz,
Als der Gefallnen Schmerz
Dich zu uns in die Welt getrieben.

Ah, we acknowledge our guilt,
and ask for nothing other than your patience
and your immeasurable love.
Your compassionate heart was broken
when the sorrow of those who had fallen
drove you to us in this world.

Recitativo A

5

Recitative [Alto]

Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Ach, lass uns durch die scharfen Ruten
Nicht allzu heftig bluten!
O Gott, der du ein Gott der Ordnung bist,
Du weißt, was bei der Feinde Grimm
Vor Grausamkeit und Unrecht ist.
Wohlan, so strecke deine Hand
Auf ein erschreckt geplagtes Land,
Die kann der Feinde Macht bezwingen
Und uns beständig Friede bringen!

Ah, under the sharp rods
do not make us bleed too heavily!
O God, you who are a God of order,
you know that in the wrath of our enemies
what cruelty and injustice there is.
Come then, stretch out your hand
to a frightened, tormented land,
your hand that is able to overcome the might of our enemies
and bring us lasting peace!

Chorale [S, A, T, B]

Corno e Oboe d'amore I e Violino I col Soprano, Oboe d'amore II e Violino II coll'Alto, Viola col Tenore, Continuo

Erleucht auch unser Sinn und Herz
Durch den Geist deiner Gnad,
Dass wir nicht treiben draus ein Scherz,
Der unsrer Seelen schad.
O Jesu Christ,
Allein du bist,
Der solchs wohl kann ausrichten.

Enlighten also our hearts and minds
through the spirit of your mercy,
so that we may not act frivolously
to the harm of our souls.
O Jesus Christ
you alone
can well accomplish this.
