Title: |
Engraving by A. Weger |
Description: |
Printed by the firm of art printers founded in Leipzig in 1840 by Weger; published by Ferdinand Schneider, Berlin. The same engraving was used as the frontispiece of the first volume of Carl Heinrich Bitter’s biography of Bach (1865) with the original dated incorrectly 1735, which led to confusion in iconographical research (see Wustmann III) until its restoration in 1913 revealed the original inscription (cf. B-01). A cruder variation on this engraving without the canon-sheet appears as frontispiece in August Reissmann’s 1881 biography Bach. |
