Johann Gottlieb Söllner (Kantor, Pastor, Composer, Bach's Pupil)

Born: September 1, 1732 - Zwickau, Saxony, Germany
Died: August 7, 1798 - Glauchau, Saxony, Germany

Johann Gottlieb Söllner [Johannes Gottliebius Söllnerus] was a German Kantor, Pastor, composer and theologian. He was born the son of Johann Söllner (weaver in Zwickau). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 17, 1748 (when Ernesti was the director and Fischer the assistant director); studied there from 1748 to 1756 (1748-1750 under J.S. Bach). Recommended by Johann Tobias Krebs, jr., and an excellent singer, he was accepted immediately upon arrival in Leipzig into the primary choir where he became a concertist, eventually a prefect. In 1756 he enrolled at the University of Leipzig. After finishing his studies at the university he was employed as a private tutor at the home of the respected merchant Crusius in Chemnitz; served as town Kantor in Ernstthal from 1758 to 1770, where he performed a piece of church music every fortnight. After 1770. he took holy orders and was Lutheran Pastor in Schlunzig until 1782, when he became Archdeacon of Glauchau and Pastor of Gesau. He was industrious and ambitious, an impressive representative of the broadly educated intellectuals of the 18th century. Of his works only the chorale cantata.
