Georg Österreich (Composer)

The German composer, Georg Österreich, was pupil of Johann Theile (1646-1724) at Wolfenbütte. He ‘moved into the Kapellmeister's house and lodged with him, [and he] instructed him … quite untiringly and faithfully in composition’. A pupil at Merseburg, Johann Ziegler, ‘studied composition with various teachers … [until he] finally found more satisfaction with Kapellmeister Theile’. Georg Österreich was also a student of Johann Schelle (1648-1701).

Georg Österreich was Kapellmeister and Kantor to the ducal court of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. In this post he began in 1796 to give compositions lessons to Heinrich Bokemeyer (1679-1751). Georg Österreich was later Kapellmeister at the court of Gottorf. In this post he copied or supervised the copying of the music and built a large collection of scores and books, with hundreds manuscripts of sacred music. This library was inherited by his pupil Heinrich Bokemeyer.
