Johann August Landvoigt (Librettist, Bach's Pupil)

Born: November 101 or 93 4, 1715 - Gaschwitz, near Leipzig, Saxony, Germany
Died: February 16, 1766 - Marienberg, Saale, Germany

The lawyer, Johann August Landvoigt, was the son of Johann August Landvoigt ((art and pleasure gardener in Leipzig). He was was an “Externus” since August 22, 1729; then enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on July 9, 1731; and studied there from 1731 to 1737. While there he wrote the text of Cantata Thomana saß annoch betrübt, BWV Anh 19, performed on November 21, 1734 when the new Rector, I.A. Ernesti, was installed. Only Landvoigt's text is extant. Around 1740 he belonged to the circle of students around Johann Christoph Gottsched. He is listed as 1st flautist (1746-1748) of the Tabula Musicorum, a concert society.

After his studies, Johann August Landvoigt was notary in Leipzig from 1753; and excise commissioner in Marienberg from 1756. In 1758 in Marienberg, Saale he married Sophie Friederike Schlegel, aunt of the famous poet and critic, August Wilhelm Schlegel.
