Philipp David Kräuter was a German organist, teacher, Kantor, composer and music director. He was born the son of a soldier in Augsburg. From 1697 he attended the Gymnasiums St. Anna in Augsburg. From April 1712 to the end of September 1713 he was a student of J.S. Bach in Weimar; and in his request to the Augsburg authorities to prolong his studies he mentioned the prospect of hearing 'much fine Italian and French music from which I shall be able to profit in the composing of concertos and overtures'. Back in Augsburg in early December 1713, he became the successor of Daniel Merck (1650-1713) as Kantor and director musices (Music Director) at the Annenkirche, where he remained for the rest of his life. He introduced the church cantata in Augsburg and in 1718 with a memorandum to improve church singing. From 1720 he worked as the Music Director of his hometown. Through the establishment of a Collegium Musicum, the establishment of public concerts and the intensive maintenance of oratorio performances, he also made a contribution to bourgeois musical life. among his pupils there was the composer Johann Caspar Seyfert (1697-1767).
Philipp David Kräuter lessons with J.S. Bach were made possible by a grant from the Augsburg Council and are therefore attested by several documents in the Augsburg files. His letters from Weimar contain detailed descriptions of the circumstances surrounding J.S. Bach's lessons.
