Samuel Gmelin was a German musician and schoolmaster. He matriculated at Jena University in September 1715, and studied with J.S. Bach in Weimar between then and 1717. In 1719 he was appointed Kantor at Elsterberg, about 15 km. (10 miles) north of Plauen, and in 1726 applied unsuccessfully for a similar post at the Johanniskirche in Plauen itself. Other applications for posts in Schleiz and Gera also came to nothing, and he remained in Elsterberg, where he was made Rector in 1730. |
