Fons Ziekman (Choral Conductor)

Born: 1948 - Amsterdam-West, the Netherlands

The Dutch choral conductor, Fons Ziekman, was a chorister during his youth, at the male choir of the Obrecht church in Amsterdam. After obtaining his degree in Education, he was appointed as a teacher in the Elementary School as well as the Chorus Master at the church in Wormer.

In 1974 Fons Ziekman resigned from his teaching engagement and started his studies of Music and Chorus Conducting at the Alkmaar's Conservatorium. In addition, he specialized for a couple of years in Chorus Conducting with Kurt Thomas under the mentorships of Felix de Nobel, Hans van den Hombergh and Jan Eelkema, while conductiong various choirs in Holland. In 1977, he started to teach chorus conducting at the Haarlem's Choir School at St. Bavo. In addition he was appointed as an assistant to Mgr. Dr. Jan Valkestijn. In 1989, after the retirement of Jan Valkestijn, he was engaged as the Chorus Master of the Cathedral Choir as well the Director of the Muziekinstituut St.Bavo.
