Paul Vorwerk (Choral Conductor)

Born: USA

The American choral conductor and music pedagogue, Paul Vorwerk, is a graduate of Occidental College, and his post-graduate activity included study at the University of Southern California, Stanford University and independent research in Rome. He received his master's degree from CalArts (Galifornia Institute of the Arts) in 1975 and has participated in master-classes with Herbert Blomstedt.

Paul Vorwerk has been on the CalArts faculty since 1975 except for a period in the 1980’s at the University of California, Santa Cruz. In December 1995, Vorwerk was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Santa Cruz Chorale, a select ensemble of singers based in the Monterey Bay region.

Paul Vorwerk is well-known in Los Angeles for his work as the founder-director of Musica Pacifica, a chamber ensemble of singers and players of historical instruments whose ABC recording of da Gagliano's 1608 opera La Dafne received a Grammy nomination and won the Record World Critic's award for best classical recording (music composed before 1700). In addition, he founded the Pacifica Singers, a choral ensemble which appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ojai Festival Orchestra and in premiere performances of works of several 20th-century composers.
