Virtuosi Brunenses
Czech Opera Symphony Orchestra (Orchestra)

Founded: Brno, Czech Republic

The Czech Opera Orchestra, known in its native land as the “Virtuosi Brunenses”, was founded by conductor and violinist Karel Mitáš, concertmaster of the Janacek Opera Orchestra in the city of Brno’s National Opera House.

The orchestra membership includes leading musicians from the Janacek Opera Orchestra, Brno Philharmonic and first chairs/section leaders of other top Czech Republic Orchestras. With this wealth of musical experience and background, the Orchestra is able to offer a broad range of opera and orchestral works, as well as chamber orchestra repertoire.

The Orchestra has been in residence in Germany’s ‘Rossini in Wildbad’ Festival for the past seven seasons, 2008 to 2014, performing a broad range of operatic repertoire and recordings under the batons of conductors including Alberto Zedda, Antonino Fogliani, Jean-Luc Tingaud, Jose Miguel Perez Sierra, Luciano Acocella and others. Their activities at the Festival also including making well-received recordings of famous Rossini operas including L’Italiana in Algeri, Othello, La Gazza Ladra, Le Siege de Corinthe, Semiramide and others.

In 2010, the Orchestra received the Critics’ Prize as Best Ensemble following its performances at the Opera Festival held in Bad Hersfeld, “Oper an der Stiftsruine”, where the outdoor performances are held in the ruins of a famous historic church dating from 1300. They have performed for five successive seasons at that Festival. The recording operas (Semiramide) of 2013, won in 2014 a number of major awards from the specialized press, such as from classicalear.co.uk, operanews.com and rondomagazin.de.

The Orchestra after a very successfull tour in China is currently preparing for upcoming interesting tours and pojects abroad, where they will perform works by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, L.v. Beethoven, Dvorak and many others.
