Joost van Velzen (Tenor)

Born: The Netherlands

The Dutch tenor, Joost van Velzen, received his classical vocal training at the Koninklijk Conservatorium (Royal Conservatory) in The Hague and soon became hooked on the early music and Lieder repertoire. Moreover, through the interpretation of some roles at the Dutch National Opera Academy, he made acquaintance with the theatre music. The combination of early music and theatre, particularly by composers such as Purcell, Monteverdi and George Frideric Handel, led to his first specialization.

But Joost van Velzen wanted more. His search for all the possibilities of the tenor voice and to the technical skills of the 19th-century repertoire led him to the American heroic tenor Dennis Heath in Munich and the Icelandic tenor Jón Thorsteinsson, by whom he is being coached. With a musical interests ranging from Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck to Steve Reich, Joost has a built very wide repertoire.
