Bart Uvyn (Counter-tenor)

Born: May 5, 1985 - Gent, Belgium

Countertenor Bart Uvyn started his musical studies at the age of 6 at the conservatory in Destelbergen. He studied the violin and singing. This was followed by violin and singing studies (with Frederik Meireson). Since 1995, he sang at the Ghent cathedral choir Schola Cantorum, conducted by Michael Ghijs and Filip Martens. In 2003 he started his vocal studies as a counter-tenor in the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven, where he graduated in 2008 with Master of Music degree in Singing. His teachers were Dina Grossberger and Dirk Snellings (Capilla Flamenca). Afterwards he specialized in early music at the Lemmensinstituut and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in the frame of the Erasmus Project. He was taught by Peter Kooy, Michael Chance, Rita Dams and Jill Feldman. He also attended master-classes with Alexander Oliver, Zeger Vandersteene, Udo Reinemann and Jeannette Fisher.

Bart Uvyn has performed as a soloist among others in St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), Mass in B minor (BWV 232) and several cantatas by J.S. Bach, Coronation Mass by W.A. Mozart, Messiah and Dixit Dominus by George Frideric Handel, Te Deum by Charpentier, cantatas by Heinrich Schütz and Jan Dismas Zelenka.

Bart Uvyn is regulary invited by ensembles such as Capilla Flamenca, Psallentes, Vox Luminis (Director: Lionel Meunier) and Sette Voci (Director: Peter Kooy). He also participated in various projects of the Bach Academy (Directors: Christoph Siebert and Philippe Herreweghe), Ensemble BachPlus (Directors: Bart Naessens & Elisabeth Hermans) and Bl!ndman [vox], Camerata Aetas Nova (Director: Dieter Staelens), El Grillo (Director: Inge Bollaert), Oratoriumkoor Cantores (Director: Reinhard Andries). He is also a fixed ensemble member of Currende and Victoria Consort (Director of both: Erik Van Nevel) and often participates in projects with Collegium Vocale Gent (Director: Philippe Herreweghe). He is co-founder of Utopia - Belgian Handmade Polyphony and founding member of the vocal ensemble Aequalis.

Bart Uvyn made CD recording with Sette Voci. In 2010 he sang the role of Philibert Naturel in the opera Rage d’Amours by Rob Zuidam conducted by Otto Tausk. In the near future he sings in different productions with Collegium Vocale Gent, Utopia, Ensemble BachPlus and Nederlandse Bachvereniging (Director: Jos van Veldhoven), La Chapelle Harmonique (Director: Valentin Tournet).

As a teacher Bart Uvyn has experience in both the subsidized academic education and the private sector.
