David Stoneman (Bass-Baritone)

Born: Newport Beach, California, USA

The American bass-baritone, David Stoneman, studied at Servite High School in Anaheim, California (Class of 1976); and at at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California (Music · Economics, Class of 1979. He obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Chapman University in Orange, California (1981); and his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles (1981-1984).

After studying, David Stoneman moved to Boston after spending a summer as a student at Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He spent two decades in Boston and New York singing opera and oratorio. Before moving back home to California, he spent a number of years in New York City where he worked with John Basil of the American Globe Theater. Praised for his rich, full singing and subtlety of stagecraft, he is known for his work in both classic and modern opera. He has sung with opera companies from Santa Barbara to Boston in repertoire ranging from Henry Purcell to Philip Glass and in roles from Figaro to Scarpia. He has appeared in many concerts with Pacific Symphony. His oratorio repertoire includes works as diverse as the requiems of W.A. Mozart, Johannes Brahms and Verdi, Igor Stravinsky’s Mass and Orff’s Carmina Burana. Though opera has been the main focus of his singing career, on the lighter side, he has enjoyed roles in Follies, South Pacific, Six Degrees of Separation and 42nd Street.

Recently released recordings featuring Stoneman include The Juniper Tree by Philip Glass and 2116, a new musical by science fiction writer Ray Bradbury. Upcoming events include singing the title role in the LA Formosan Master Chorale’s production of Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah, the baritone solos in Ralph Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem with the Long Beach Chorale & Chamber Orchestra (Director: Eliza Rubenstein) and W.A. Mozart's Requiem with the Orange County Women's Chorus.

Davis Stoneman is also a registered piano technician and a member of the Piano Technicians Guild.. He worked as Design Department Manager at DisplayWorks (1998-2008) and since 2008 he is Sole Proprietor of David Stoneman Piano Tuning. He currently lives in Aliso Viejo, California. He is married since June 21, 1998.
