Margaret Stilwell (Contralto)

Born: September 26, 1924 - Toronto, Canada
Died: June 22, 1988 - Oakville, Ontario, Canada

The Canadian contralto, Margaret Edith Christine Stilwell (born: Galbraith), studied piano with Marcella Anderson and singing with Albert Whitehead and George Lambert.

Margaret Stilwell was a member of the Leslie Bell Singers from 1939 to 1942, and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, she was a soloist under Sir Ernest MacMillan in the 1944 CBC Handel/Bach series. In 1952 she was a soloist in Messiah at Massey Hall with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, and also sang in J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244), which was recorded (1953, Beaver) and was repeated (1954) at Carnegie Hall. She was soloist at Bloor Street United Church and Grace Church on-the-Hill, Toronto, gave CBC recitals, and has sung with orchestras in Halifax, Ottawa, London (Ontario), and Winnipeg. She was a member of the Festival Singers of Canada.

Margaret Stilwell's daughter (Marcia) Jean Stiwell (born: 1955), is a soprano singer.
