Ferenc Sapszon (Choral Conductor)

Born: December 14, 1929 - Szeged, Hungary

The Hungarian choral conductor, Ferenc Sapszon, studied at the Ferenc Liszt Conservatory in Budapest from 1950 to 1957 with Zoltán Vásárhelyi.

In 1957-1958 Ferenc Sapszon worked with the National Philharmonic Orchestra under the conductor Férfikarnál Állami. From 1958 to 1964 he worked as correpetitor with the Rádióénekkar (Hungarian Radio Chorus), from 1964 to 1966 as conductor and from 1966 to 1990 as main director.

Since 1990 Ferenc Sapszon is Professor of choral conducting at the Debrecen Faculty of the Ferenc Liszt Conservatory. In addition he has directed various amateur choirs: from 1945 to 1950 in Szeged and since 1950 in Budapest (1952-1985 Semmelweis Kórus; 1964-1978 Bartók Kórus; since 1984 Budaörsi Pro Musica Kórus; since 1997 Vass Lajos Kórusa of the Slovak-Hungarian teachers).

His awards include: Ferenc Liszt Award (1972); Award of the Hungarian Trades Union Council (1974); Honoured Artist of the Hungarian People's Republic (1982); Bartók-Pásztory Prize (1985); Outstanding Artist of Hungarian People's Republic (1989); 1989 Honorary Citizen of Budapest (1989); Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic (1994). He is a member of the Union of Hungarian Musicians; Hungarian Ferenc Liszt, Lajos Bardos & Zoltán Kodály Societies; Society of Hungarian Choirs.

All his recordings are on the Hungaroton label and include many works by Hungarian composers.
