Sächsische Barockorchester (Baroque Orchestra)

Born: 1989-1990 - Leipzig, Saxony, Germany

The Sächsische Barockorchester (Saxon Baroque Orchestra) was founded in 1989/90 by Gotthold Schwarz and fellow musicians from Leipzig and central Germany with the aim of playing music of the Baroque to be heard in a natural and living way.

The music of J.S. Bach has a special role in the playing of the Leipzig ensemble. In addition, the orchestra profiles with the discovery and exhibition of works by other composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Periodically, the Sächsische Barockorchester appears as a guest at the Bachfest Leipzig and other major festivals and has also collaborated with renowned soloists and ensembles of international fame.

Another focus of the work is the study of music of Georg Philipp Telemann. Through close contact with the Telemannzentrum in Magdeburg, there was a great contribution to the performance of previously unknown works by the composer. At the Bachfest Leipzig in 2007 and the Telemann Festtagen Magdeburg in 2010, the Sächsische Barockorchester under the direction of Gotthold Schwarz performed with great success the opera Germanicus, rediscovered and partly reconstructed by the Leipzig musicologist Michael Maul.

Gotthold Schwarz is working with the Sächsische Barockorchester not only as a conductor but also as a singer. Several CD and radio recordings with German radio stations document the sensuous sound and virtuosic interpretation of this special ensemble. Since 2008 they issued an album with solo cantatas by G.P. Telemann and other North German masters of the 17th century, as well as the oratorios Der Tod Jesu, Der Tag des Gerichts and the opera Germanicus by G.P. Telemann.
