Der Staats- und Domchor Berlin (The State and Cathedral Choir Berlin = SDB) are one of the most renowned boy choirs of Germany. It is the oldest musical organization of Berlin. Already 1465 Friedrich II chose of Hohenzollern for the music in the "Dhumkerke" five "singing boys". Later the establishment of a Hofkapelle, also under the direction of Johannes Eccard, led well hundred years at the first bloom time of the choir extended in the meantime to twelve singers. To international reputation the ensemble came for the first time into 19th Century under the direction of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Otto Nicolai and August Neithardt. After the end of the First World War in the meantime very successful yard and cathedral choir with the Kaisertum lost its political foundation, in the today's "state and cathedral choir Berlin" were renamed and the university for music Berlin attached. Since beginning of the thirties the National Socialist influence coined/shaped also this ensemble in increasing way, up to the political instrumentalization with acts of state.
The situation of the choir after the Second World War reflected the island situation of Berlin in the cold war. Robbed, the singers had to change over to its actual effect place to other churches of the city and became at the same time by international concert journeys to the Ambassador of divided Germany.
Today the state and cathedral choir are part of the university of the arts Berlin. Since 1993 it sings again in the citizen of Berlin cathedral.
The today's repertoire covers the large works of the abendländischen choir culture. In the center are located thereby traditionally compositions 16. to 18. Century. For three years increased also works belong the romance, to the classical and the direct modern trend to the program. Apart from numerous prices, among other things with the German choir competition, the choir was distinguished 2002 with the European youth choir culture price. Citizens of Berlin the music life enrich the ensemble members by appearances in productions of the opera houses and co-operations with concerts in the citizens of Berlin Philharmonic Concert Hall. |
