Salzburger Barockensemble (Instrumental Baroque Ensemble)
Founded: Salzburg, Austria
The members of the Salzburger Barockensemble owe their understanding of Baroque music and its expressive forms above all to Nikolaus Hamoncourt, under whom they have studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum and performed in his Concentus Musicus. A number of these musicians are members of ensembles and orchestras such as the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, Vienna's Musica Antiqua, the Ensemble Recreation, Florilegium Musicum, and Cologne's Musica Antiqua. In its basic form, the ensemble consists of five musicians: 2 violinists, a cellist, a keyboard player (for the harpsichord or positive organ) and a singer. The instruments used are originals from the 17th and 18th centuries or faithful copies. The ensemble occasionally performs with a great number of musicians in concertos, music for choruses of instruments, cantatas (e.g. by Johann Sebastian Each) and oratorios.
