Mark Rehnstrom (Baritone)

Born: October 2, 1957 - Kane, Pennsylvania, USA

The American baritone, Mark Rehnstrom (formerly Mark Johnson), studied at Kane Area Sr. High School in Kane, Pennsylvania (Class of 1975). He obtained his Bachelor of Music degree from Mansfeld University (1979), where he was was Musician of the Year in 1979. While at Mansfield. he began his career as a baritone singing the baritone solos in Karel Husa’s American Te Deum at Mansfield and at the Eastman School of Music. He received his Master of Music degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana (1983). While at Indiana he sang the role of Sharpless in Madame Butterfly, and the baritone solos in Benjamin Britten's War Requiem.

Since 1984, Mark Rehnstrom has lived in New York City as a professional choral singer, singing with choirs such as the New York Choral Artists, Musica Sacra, Voices of Ascension, and New York City Opera Chorus, and under many outstanding conductors such as Kurt Masur, Colin Davis, Zubin Mehta, Richard Westenburg, John Nelson, Alice Parker, Robert Shaw, and Leonard Bernstein. He has sung and traveled with the Ensemble for Early Music performing in the ensembles productions of Herod and the Innocents, Daniel and the Lions, The Play Saint Nicholas, and various other medieval liturgical dramas.

Mark Rehnstrom performed the role of the Ringmaster in Smetan’s Bartered Bride with the Sarasota Opera, Canio in I Pagliacci with the Pine Mountain Music Festival in Michigan and with the Tri-State Opera in Poughkeepsie, NY, Froh in Das Rheingold in Arizona Opera’s production of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, the First Armed Guard in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte with the Dallas Opera and Dimitri in the Milwaukee Symphony’s concert version of Boris Godunov. and Froh in Das Rheingold with the Dallas Opera.

Mark Rehnstrom regularly sings the tenor solos in L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 having performed it with the Nashville Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Vermont Symphony, Waterbury Symphony, Greenville Symphony, New York Chamber Symphony, San Francisco Pops, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He currently lives in Guilford, Connecticut.
