Ruth Provost (Soprano)

Born: England

The English soprano, Ruth Provost, was a cellist Stringwise participant and later a member of the youth string orchestra. She read Music at Christ’s College, Cambridge, and worked actively as both a cellist and singer during this time. After graduating, she decided to embark upon a singing career, and began studying with Lynton Atkinson.

Ruth Provost has appeared as a soloist in venues across the UK; engagements so far include J.S. Bach's Cantata Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen (BWV 51) and St John Passion (BWV 245), Dietrich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri, W.A. Mozart's Reqiuem and Mass in C minor and George Frideric Handel's Messiah, with such groups as the Cambridge University Baroque Ensemble, Manchester Baroque, the Thames Chamber Orchestra and Fretwork. In March 2010, she sang Schubert's Mass No. 6 in E flat major at St Swithun's Performing Arts Centre with Winchester Music Club & Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Wilks. In April 2017, she sang George Frideric Handel's Dettingen Te Deum & Te Deum in A, and J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) at Cadogan Hall in London with Goldsmiths Choral Union and the Musicians of London, conducted by Brian Wright. In April 2017, she sang Gabriel Fauré's Requiem at St. Andrew’s Church, Maple Road, Surbiton, conducte by David Condry. She also performs regularly as a recitalist, specialising in 19th and 20th century song.

As well as solo performances Ruth Provost has worked with leading choirs - The Sixteen (Director: Harry Christophers), The Tallis Scholars (Director: Peter Phillips) and Arcangelo (Director: Jonathan Cohen), to name but two.

Ruth Provost has recorded as a named soloist with Christ’s College Chapel Choir, the Bede Singers and the Oxford Choir under directors such as David Hill and Christopher Robinson, and recently performed Haydn’s Salve Regina with Manchester Cathedral Choir live on BBC Radio 3. She also sings on a regular basis at the London Oratory and St Pancras Church, London, and has toured in Europe with several groups including French Baroque orchestra Le Concert d'Astrée (Director: Emmanuelle Haïm). She currntly lives in Southwell.
