The Dutch contralto/mezzo-soprano, Karin van der Poel, studied at Eemland college (1974-1980). She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (Utrecht Conservatory), where she studied voice (1980-1989). Her voice has been heard in a number of opera productions too, and she has taken part in several premières of works by contemporary composers.

She has been a member of the Nederlands Kamerkoor since 1990, singing as an alto/second soprano in music from medieval 'till contemporary music. Expert in singing new scores and pieces with theatrical challenges. Widespread expertise in all kinds of music. Working with world famous conductors like Reinbert de Leeuw, Frans Brüggen, Philippe Herreweghe, Ton Koopman, Yannick Sequin, Simon Rattle, and Eric Ericson. Within the Nederlands Kamerkoor she has often appeared and continues to appear as a soloist, for instance recently in the première of the chamber opera Die Todesfrau by Hans Kox.

Alongside her job with the Nederlands Kamerkoor, Karin van der Popel loves her work as a singing coach. She worked as singing teacher at music school leusden (1987-1996); vocal coach of several amateur choirs (1983-2012); Singing teacher at HKU (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht = Utrecht School of the Arts) (2006-2014); classical singing teacher at HKU music faculty (August 2003-Present).
