L'Orfeo Barockorchester (Baroque Orchestra)

Founded: 1996 - Austria

For two decades now the L’Orfeo Barockorchester ranges among the most prominent players on the Early Music stage. According to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung the international ensemble, directed by its founder Michi Gaigg, boasts uniqueness which sets it apart from any globalized uniformity. This quality is based on widely diverse musical synergies. A spirited approach, a sense of continuity, healthy dynamics in the ensemble and an inquisitive nature are the ingredients for Michi Gaigg’s recipe. Against this background she creates her own colourful, sensual, temperamental and unmistakable handwriting. The internationally acclaimed Austrian ensemble is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2016.

L'Orfeo has presented some world premieres and has been internationally awarded for its recordings by BBC Music Magazine, Diapason, Gramophone, Pizzicato (“Supersonic Award”), Le Monde de la Musique, Fono Forum, Radio Österreich 1 (“Pasticcio Prize”) as well as the German Music Award “Echo Klassik”.

L'Orfeo impresses as an opera orchestra. Time and again L'Orfeo can be seen and heard as an opera orchestra, during 2015 with W.A. Mozart’s Singspiel, Die verstellte Gärtnerin, and with Pigmalion and Anacréon, two Actes de ballet by Jean-Philippe Rameau. Further rarities and master works include operas by Georg Philipp Telemann, Georg Anton Benda, Christoph Willibald Gluck, W.A. Mozart, Joseph Haydn as well as a trilogy of early works by Gioachino Rossini (including his La scala di seta).Together with director Benjamin Schad and the Swedish tenor Anders J. Dahlin, Michi Gaigg and the L'Orfeo Barockorchester dedicated a multi-disciplined project to one of the most spectacular French personalities of the 18th century, the haute-contre Pierre de Jélyotte.

Opera Production 2015: W.A. Mozart’s Die verstellte Gärtnerin (Singspiel in three acts - the authorised and arranged German version by W.A. Mozart of his Dramma giocoso La finta giardiniera KV 196).
