Michael Nowak (Tenor)

Born: Innsbruck, Austria

The Austrian tenor, Michael Nowak, already as a child was a soloist with the Vienna Boys Choir. He studied at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz with Prof. Mag. Gerald Trabesinger and graduated with distinction. He completed his training with studies in lied and oratorio at the Conservatory of Music in Vienna with Kammersänger Kurt Equiluz. Michael Nowak was a finalist at the Mozart International Singing Competition in 1991 and prizewinner at the first International Bodensee Competition in 1992.

Before becoming a member of the Badische Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, Michael Nowak appeared several times as a guest in the role of Nero in LŽincoronazione di Poppea at the Stadttheater in Biel. Since 1997 he has been a permanent member of the ensemble at the Niedersächsische Staatstheater in Hanover, where he has sung roles such as David in Richard WagnerŽs Die Meistersinger, the Italian Tenor in Capriccio of R. Strauss, the Marquis in Zar und Zimmermann by Albert Lortzing as well as the Rossini roles of Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola. He also participated in the Monteverdi cycle at the Staatsoper (Il ritorno dŽUlisse in patria, 1999) and was heard as Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte.

Michael Nowak has appeared at the International Bruckner Festival in Linz, the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival and the Händel Festival in Halle and has performed in many cities throughout Germany and abroad, including the Musikverein in Vienna, the Philharmonie and the Herkulessaal in Munich, the Philharmonie in Cologne, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Donau Festival Weeks in Austria, the Gmündner Festival and in Bolzano, Antwerp and Bressanone.

In addition, Michael Nowak has also made several CD recordings. His engagements in 1999 included a performance of Benjamin Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings at the NDR in Hanover with the Lucerne Festival Strings. In March 2000 he sang under Helmuth Rilling in the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden, the Liederhalle in Stuttgart and the Vienna Musikverein (J.S. Bach's Cantatas and the W.A. Mozart's Requiem).

The artist takes particular interest in the passions and oratorios of J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel oratorios and the concert repertoire of W.A. Mozart, L.v. Beethoven, Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn.
