Fritz Neumeyer (Harpsichord)

Born: July 2, 1900 - Saarbrücken, Germany
Died: January 16, 1983 - Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany

Fritz Neumeyer was an important German harpsichordist, pianist, musicologist and composer. He studied from 1919 to 1921 in Köln music theory with Franz Bölscheand piano with Lonny Epstein. Then, from 1921 to 1924, in Berlin orchestra conducting with Alexander von Fielitz, music theory with William Klatte and piano with James Kwast. At the same timehe studied musicology at the Universities of Köln and Berlin.

From 1924 to 1927 Fritz Neumeyer he worked as korrepetitor, kapellmeister and a choir director in Saarbrücken. There he created in 1927 the “Saarbrücker Vereinigung für Alte Musik”. He began a career as a soloist and a chamber musician. He appeared frequently with Gustav Scheck and August Wenzinger in a chamber trio for early music, which existed from 1935 to 1965.

From 1939 to 1944 Fritz Neumeyer was a professor at the Berliner Musikhochschule, then from 1946 to 1969 professor for historical keyboard instruments at the Musikhochschule Freiburg im Breisgau. Since 1954 he was also a member of the Capella Coloniensis, one of the first chamber orchestras, which played on historical instruments. From 1960 to 1965 he was in addition member of the Wiener Solisten. From 1968 until his death, he appeared with his pupil Rolf Junghanns in a successful harpsichord duo.
