Jonathan Nadel (Tenor)

Born: USA

The American lyric tenor, Jonathan Nadel, studied at Birmingham High - Go Braves! (1988-1992). He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and his Bachelor of degree in History from the University of California at Berkeley (1992-1996); and his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from New England Conservatory of Music (1998-2000), where he studied voice with Richard Hughes. His other teachers have included: Mark Goodrich, David Cox and Jeffrey Thomas. He aloattended master-classes with Cecilia Bartoli (mezzo-soprano), Pierre Vallet (Met Opera Coach), Heidi Grant-Murphy (soprano) and Sanford Sylvan (bass-baritone).

Jonathan Nadel, has performed opera, oratorio, concert, and choral roles throughout the USA and Western Europe with the San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Lyric Opera, Festival Opera, Golden West Opera, Berkeley Lyric Opera, Berkeley Opera, Opera Piccola, Mendocino Music Festival, Sonoma City Opera, North Bay Opera, Apollo Educational Touring Opera, Trinity Repertory Company, San Francisco Fringe Festival, San Francisco Sinfonietta, Harvard Pro Musica, Mill Valley Festival, Belmont Symphony, Bay Area Summer Opera Theatre Institute, American Bach Soloists (Director: Jeffrey Thomas), and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, among others. He has performed under the conductors: Ian Robertson, John Moriarty, Bryan Nies and Jonathan Khuner, among others.

In recent seasons, Jonathan Nadel performed the roles of Emperor Altoum in Turandot with his company debut at Festival Opera, Enki in Marcia Burchard’s new opera The Descent of Inanna at Dominican University, Alfredo in La Traviata with the San Francisco Lyric Opera, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Golden West Opera and the tenor roles of Obadjah and Ahab in Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah with the San Jose Symphonic Choir. Other operatic roles include Bastien with Pocket Opera, Basilio with North Bay Opera, Nemorino with Arizona Opera Outreach, the Witch in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel and Gretel at Quisisana resort in Maine, and Strange Man in the world premiere of Wuornos at the Yerba Buena Center. Concert roles include Il Testo in Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda with the Early Music Ensemble at UC Davis, Schubert’s Mass in G and L.v. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis Gloria at the Mondavi Center, W.A. Mozart's Missa Brevis in G, Finzi’s Magnificat with the Contra Costa Chorale, F. Mendelssohn's with the Andover Academy, Theobald in Schubert’s Wedding Roast with Pocket Opera, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass at Brandeis University, W.A. Mozart's Mass in C at the Church of the Advent in Boston, the title role in George Frideric Handel's Judas Maccabaeus with the West Marin Music Festival, and both Benjamin Britten's Rejoice In The Lamb and Sergei Rachmaninov's Vespers at UC Berkeley.

Jonathan Nadel has worked as Instructor of Voice at Los Medanos College (September 2006-June 2008); Tenor, Bracebridge Dinners at Andrea Fulton Productions (2001-2009);. High Holidays Singer at Congregation Emanu-El (since 2000); Owner, Lead Instructor at Nadel Voice Studios (since October 2000); Instructor of Voice at University of California at Davis (since 2008; Prepare students for departmental recitals in completing their B.A. degree in music; performing faculty recitals and campus concerts). In addition to his private voice studios in Berkeley and El Cerrito, he teaches applied voice at UC Davis. His students have performed with the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Festival Opera, West Bay Opera, Sacramento Opera, Lyric Theatre of San Jose, The China Broadcasting Performing-Arts Group, Institut Goethe – Paris, Aspen Music Festival, BASOTI, Lamplighters Music Theatre, Woodminster Summer Musicals, TheatreWorks, New Conservatory Theater, Mission City Opera, Alameda Civic Light Opera, Seaside Music Theater – Florida, Contra Costa Civic Theatre, Oakland East Bay Symphony Chorus, Théâtre Adyar – Paris, Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, Quisisana Resort – Maine, Les Misérables National Tour, and many others.

Jonathan Nadel has recorded on the Harmonia Mundi USA, Koch International, Centaur, Arsis, Newport Classics, and Pro Música labels.

He spends downtime with his family seeking out new adventures, vegetable and herb gardening, cooking, reading, and teaching his children.
