Kimy McLaren (Soprano)

Born: Canada

The Canadian soprano, Kimy McLaren, is a graduate of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and former member of the Opera Studio of the Opéra National du Rhin. She was a prize-winner at the prestigious International Mozart Competition in Salzburg and at the Mario Lanza Competition in Italy.

Kimy McLaren is at the beginning of a fruitful career, spanning Baroque to contemporary repertoire. Her concert repertoire includes: Felix Mendelssohn's Elias, Chausson’s Poème de l’Amour et de la Mer, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Romances, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, Francis Poulenc’s Gloria and Stabat Mater, Alban Berg’s Sieben frühe Lieder and Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch, having appeared with such esteemed orchestras as the Montreal Symphony Orchestra - Charles Dutoit and Kent Nagano, Orchestre Métropolitain and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Malaysian Philhamony, Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, I Musici de Montréal, Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse, Orchestre philharmonique de Marseille, Orchestre philharmonique de Freiburg and Wiener Kammerorchester under Jori Hattori.

At the Opéra National du Rhin, Kimy McLaren performed the Nymph in Les Boréades, Ortlinde in Die Walküre, Wellgunde in Götterdämmerung. She has also been heard as Nadia in The Merry Widow, l’Infante in Le Cid and Octavie in Massenet's Cléopâtre in Marseille, Leïla in The Pearl Fishers in Toulon, Donna Elvira in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni in Mexico, Governess in Benjamin Britten's Turn of the Screw in Rouen, Marguerite in Charles Gounod's Faust in Metz and Hong Kong, Marzelline in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio and Belinda in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at the Opéra national de Bordeaux, first Lady in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte in Avignon, Armande in Alexandre Bis in Montréal, the title role in La Belle Hélène at Festival à Montpelier, both Susanna in in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Orford Arts Center in Montreal. After a return to Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris for an enormously successful run as Julie in Carousel, she has been reinvited to perform Cinderella in Sondheim's Into the woods. After a great success as Clémentine and Eugénie in L'Affaire Tailleferre at the Opéra de Limoges, she has been invited to sing in l’Aiglon conducted by Kent Nagano with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, as well as performing Juliette in C. Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette in Metz and Reims. She has also been heard as Ninfa in Monteverdi’s Orfeo, at the invitation of conductor Emmanuelle Haïm, in a joint production by Théâtre du Châtelet, Opéra de Lille, Théâtre de Caen and Opéra National du Rhin. She received tremendous acclaim for her portrayal of Marie in the Orford Arts Center production of Alban Berg's Wozzeck under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

Kimy McLaren spent the 2004-2005 season at Opéra National du Rhin as a member of the “Jeunes Voix du Rhin” ensemble. While there, she sang Sesto in Gluck's La clemenza di Tito and the title role in Ottorino Respighi’s Lucrezia. She also appeared in concert with L’Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse and in recital at the Besançon Festival. In the 2005-2006 season, she performed in the world premiere of a staged version of three J.S. Bach's Cantatas with Opéra National du Rhin. She also appeared in concert and recital with Radio Canada, the André Turp Musical Society, and for Opéra National Bordeaux. Ms. McLaren was a soloist at the Mozart Gala with L’Orchestre Métropolitain and performed Alban Berg's Sieben frühe Lieder and Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4 for the Festival Orgue et Couleurs with musicians from the Montréal Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Rolf Bertsch.

During the 2007-2008 season, Kimy McLaren returned to Opéra National du Rhin as Ortlinde in David McVicar’s production of Die Walküre. She joined Ensemble Vocal Polymnie and conductor Louis Lavigueur for performances of Bruckner’s Te Deum and Schubert’s Mass in A-flat major in Montréal, as well as singing the Dmitri Shostakovich's Romanzen Suite at Lachine Music Festival and J.S. Bach's Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena at Orford Music Festival. She was heard in recital as part of the Bel Canto series of the Montréal Symphony Orchestra. She began the 2008-2009 season in Bordeaux, singing the role of Belinda in Dido and Aeneas. She was also heard in recital in Montréal and Paris, and joined Opéra de Marseille as Nadia in Lehár’s La veuve joyeuse. She sang Leïla in Les pêcheurs de perles in Toulon and Donna Elvira in Opéra de Rouen’s production of W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, while continuing her active chamber music schedule with concerts in Montréal and Paris.

In the 2009-2010 season, Kimy McLaren debuted as Zerlina in concert performances of W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and his Orchestre Metropolitain. She was heard as soloist in George Frideric Handel's Messiah with Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra and returned to Opéra National de Bordeaux for performances of Pamina in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. In 2010-2011 season she was heard in Avignon as Wellgunde in Götterdämmerung and First Lady in Die Zauberflöte and as l’Infante in Massenet’s Le Cid in Marseilles.
