Petri Tapio Mattson (Music Director, Violin, Viola, Viola da gamba)

Born: Finland

The Finnish music director, violin, viola, viola da gamba player, Petri Tapio Mattson, studied at the Sibelius Academy between 1992 and 1999 with Grazyna Gebert (modern violin), Kreeta-Maria Kentala and Professor Jaap Schröder (Baroque violin), Timo Juntura (viola da gamba, chamber music), Rabbe Forsman and Kati Hämäläinen (chamber music, Early music performance practice), and took part in master-classes given by the likes of Gottfried Schneider, David Kim, Zoria Shikmurzajeva (modern violin), Sigiswald Kuijken, Charles Toet and Konrad Hünteler (Early music ensemble playing). In 1999 he was awarded his diploma on the Baroque violin under the guidance of legendary professor Schröder - the first of its kind at the Academy.

Petri Tapio Mattson is one of the most esteemed and versatile figures in the field of Early music in Finland. He is known for his work as leader and solo violinist with various 'period' and 'modern' orchestras, including Finnish Baroque Orchestra (formerly known as the Sixth Floor Orchestra) from 1999 to 2005, Finnish Baroque Orchestra, Finnish-Estonian Baroque Orchestra, Plein-jeu, Lappeenranta Orhcestra, and Haapavesi Chamber Orchestra. He has been active as chamber musician and solo artist with various groups and partners, performing all over Finland and in most countries of the Central and Western Europe.

In 1995 Petri Tapio Mattson founded Opus X, and has worked as the Artistic Director of the ensemble between 1995 and 2006 and again from 2009. Under his direction Opus X has made concert appearances and recordings of groundbreaking importance in the Finnish Early music scene. In particular the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach recordings, directed jointly with Miklós Spányi, have won wide international recognition. His entire discography includes recordings for the labels Alba, BIS, Ondine, Fuga, Naxos, Aeolus and La Bottega Discantica.

In addition to performing on the Early violin, viola and viola da gamba and working as an ensemble director, Petri Tapio Mattson also practices violin making which he studied under the guidance of luthier Pekka Suihkonen of Haapavesi, and writes music primarily in Baroque and heavy metal styles.
