Gordon Kreplin (Guitar)

Born: USA

The American guitarist, Gordon Kreplin, is a graduate of the American University (1975), where he studied guitar and lute with John Marlow. He furthered his guitar studies with Jose Tomas at the Oscar Espla conservatory in Alicante, Spain (1976-1978). While studying with Tomas, Kreplin was awarded a scholarship by the Spanish government to perform in Andrës Segovia’s famed month-long master-class, "Musica en Compostela" in Santiago de Compostela. He also participated in master-classes with Jose Tomas and Jose Luis Rodrigo in the USA and Spain (1975-1980).

Gordon Kreplin has taken part in North Carolina Visiting Artist Program. He was resident at Haywood Technical College, Sandhills; Technical College and Nash Technical College. He Gave more than 350 programs for schools, community groups, prisons and special needs children, 1981-1984). His tours include: Spain, sponsored by the United States Information Agency (Madrid, Soria, Altea and Barcelona, 1977-1980); South America, sponsored by the United States Information Agency (Brazil, Peru, Chile and the Bahamas, 1992); Portugal, sponsored by Portuguese Secretary of Culture and Education, Azores, (1992-1993); USA, Virgin Islands, concerts and residencies. 1984-1992, 1994-present. From Washington DC to Rio de Janeiro, from Lima to Madrid, critics have hailed Gordon Kreplin’s performances as " ... transcendent ...". " ... making magic ...", and " ... exploiting the guitar’s expressive possibilities."

Gordon Kreplin's performances have been broadcast by National Public Radio, Around New York, The Voice of America, The Voice of Spain, PM Magazine, U.S. public and commercial television, and national television in Peru and Chile. The National Endowment for the Arts and the United States Information Agency awarded him a "Highly Recommended" status for US government sponsorships abroad.

Gordon Kreplin's past professional posts include serving as a professor at George Washington University, Washington, DC (1975-1976, 1978-1980, 1988-1989); Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA (1975-1976); Virginia Public Schools, Arlington County, VA (1978-1979); Washington Bible College, Lanham, MD (1989-1992); and the Conservatorio da Horta in Faial, Azores, Portugal (1992-1993).

He has released several CD's on Ascencion Recordings, including "Cathedral" (1996), "Bach in Brazil" (1995), and "Journeys" (1992). Previously he released the CD "Gift of Spirit" (1987).

When not performing, teaching or recording, Gordon Kreplin spends time in his photography studio.
