Ilse Kögel (Koegel) (Soprano)

Born: December 27, 1902 - Charlowitz b. Pilsen (Plzeň), Czechoslovakia
Died: September 18, 1979 - Hamburg, Germany

The Czech soprano, Ilse Kögel (Koegel), began her stage career at the Stadttheater of Magdeburg and sang then at the Opera House of Leipzig. Here she participated in premiers, such as Clavigo by Max Ettinger (October 1927), Das Leben des Orest by E. Krenek (January 1930) and Der Zar läßt sich photographiern by K. Weill (February 1928). In 1932 she made a successful guest performance at the Stadttheater (since 1934 Staatsoper) of Hamburg as Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème, and then was engaged by this opera house. She had there a great career until 1954.

Above all Ilse Kögel excelled in roles from the lyric repertoire to the lecture, as well as coloratura roles: Pamina in Zauberflöte, Zerline in Don Giovanni, Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Octavian in Rosenkavalier, Eva in Meistersingern and Rosalinde in Fledermaus. She sang there also in the premiere of the opera Schwarzer Peter by Norbert Schultze (December 1937). In 1952 she performed in the German first performance of Menotti's The Consul in Hamburg the role of the Secretary. She was also active successfully as a concert singer. She was married with the actor and director Robert Meyn (1896-1972).

Recordings: On Telefunken selection from Mignon by A. Thomas she sings the title role with Peter Anders.
