The Russian pianist, Mikhail Kazakevich, studied at the Nizhny Novgorod’s State Conservatoire with the famous Soviet pianist and teacher Isaak Katz, who was a pupil of the legendary professor Alexander Goldenweiser. Immediately after graduating with the highest honours, Mikhail joined the professorial staff at the conservatoire and taught there until 1992 when his burgeoning performing career led him to the West.
As a result of his sensational performance at the International Schubert Competition in Dortmund (Germany), Mikhail Kazakevich was engaged in playing several concerts with the Dortmund Philharmonic orchestra, and also gave numerous solo recitals in Germany and France, where he received a Special Award from the Schubert Society (Germany) and a Special Prize from SACEM (France) for the performance of 20th century music. In 1993, he made his debut at the Wigmore Hall (London) and soon afterwards was signed exclusively by the BMG/Conifer recording label, for which he has made world-wide acclaimed recordings of music by J.S. Bach, L.v. Beethoven (the world premiere recording of the composer’s final versions of the Second and Fourth concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra under Sir Charles Mackerras), Alban Berg, Chopin, Gustav Mahler (Kazakevich’s own arrangements), Sergei Rachmaninov, Schubert and Schumann.
Mikhail Kazakevich has played solo and with orchestras at prestigious venues and festivals in Austria, Germany, France, Russia, Switzerland, Denmark, South Korea and the Middle East. In the UK, he has given numerous recitals at London’s Wigmore Hall, St John’s Smith Square, the South Bank Centre, and has made many live broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 (most recently in May 2004) and BBC 1 Television. He regularly performs at the Brighton Festival and the Newbury Spring Festival - most recently, with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, playing S. Rachmaninov. Among his latest projects was a performance and recording of J.S. Bach’s 48 Preludes and Fugues (Well Tempered Klavier) at the famous St George’s, Bristol. Last season, Mikhail made his return tours to Denmark and Russia, playing Mozart concertos with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under Moshe Atzmon and the Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladimir Spivakov. His forthcoming dates include appearances at the Newbury Spring Festival, London’s St John’s Smith Square with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and a solo recital at the Moscow Kremlin on the special invitation by the Presidential Executive Office of the President of Russia.
Mikhail Kazakevich has combined his intensive concert activity with teaching, which he enjoyed doing since after his graduation when he was appointed Professor at the Gorky State Conservatoire. In the UK, he taught at the Welsh College of Music and Drama (Cardiff) from 1994 to 1996. Currently, he is a Professor of Piano at the Trinity College of Music (London). He frequently gives master-classes and adjudicates at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music and the Atlantic College of Wales. His master-classes at St George’s Brandon Hill (Bristol) is an annual event. He also, gave master-classes in Jordan National Conservatoire, University of Aberdeen, Art Centre in Newport, where he was a member of a jury panel at the Newport International Piano Competition. Since 2005, Mikhail is annually invited to teach and perform at the famous Dartington International Summer School.
