Anja-Maria Kaftan (Soprano)

Born: Mönchengladbach, Germany

The German soprano, Anja-Maria Kaftan, graduated from high school received training to bank clerk foreign correspondent. She was multiple winner of the competition "Jugend musiziert " in the categories of singing and piano accompaniment. She studied singing at the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule in Düsseldorf, and since 1998 with the renowned Professor Ingeborg Reichelt. In 2001, she enrolled in the Lieder class of Matthias Goerne, graduated with arts degree with distinction and concluded with a concert exam. She attended master-classes with Professor Judith Beckmann, Professor H.J. Beyer, Professor Brigitte Fassbaender, Professor Sylvia Geszty, Ks Professor Peter Schreier and Klesie Kelly. Currently, she receives singing guidance from Brigitte Eisenfeld (Staatsoper Berlin). She received a Bayreuth scholarship from the Richard-Wagner-Verbandes and was winner of several singing competitions.

Anja-Maria Kaftan is acting professionally both in Lieder and oratorio as well as in the field of opera. So she has been heard, among other things, as Queen of the Night in W.A. Mozart's Zauberflöte at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, at the Semper Opera Dresden, the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz Munich, Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, at the Opernhaus Bonn, at the Salzburger Landestheater, at the Schleswig-Holsteinischen Landestheater, at the Vereinigten Städtischen Bühnen Krefeld und Mönchengladbach and at the Opernhaus Halle.

Anja-Maria Kaftan made her debut in the German premiere of F. Cerha's Der Riese vom Steinfeld at the Vereinigten Städtischen Bühnen Krefeld und Mönchengladbach. She was guest of the Schwetzingen Festival 2004, where she sang the role of Frankie in the premiere of A. Hölszky's Der gute Gott von Manhattan. In 2004, she made her debut under Philippe Jordan at the Sächsischen Staatsoper Dresden as Najade in Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss. She continued her guest engagement there with Der gute Gott von Manhattan under Jun Märkl and Die Zauberflöte and sang under Friedrich Haider. At the stage in Wuppertal / Heilbronn, she sang the role of the Baroness in Lortzing's Wildschütz and W.A. Mozart's Zaide, etc. with the Württembergischen Kammerorchester under Ruben Gazarian.

In 2004 Yearbook of the Opera World, she was nominated a junior artist of the year.

In the field she oratorio Anja-Maria Kaftan has participated in numerous performances with, among others, Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) (J.S. Bach), Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) and Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) (J.S. Bach), Missa Solemnis / Symphony No. 9 (L.v. Beethoven), Messiah (George Frideric Handel), Deutsches Requiem (Johannes Brahms), Le Roi David (Arthur Honegger), Carmina Burana (Orff).

A major focus of Anja-Maria Kaftan is in the field of Lieder. Her Lieder recitals have included tours to Zeughaus Neuss and to Warsaw. In 2008, she took part at in the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg.

Under the baton of Christoph Poppen, Anja-Maria Kaftan sang at the Tonhalle Düsseldorf in the Choral Fantasy by L.v. Beethoven. She sang there also in symphony concerts under Jürgen Kussmaul, and Orchestral Lieder by Richard Strauss.
