Karen Hagerman (Contralto)

Born: USA

The American contralto and music pedagogue, Karen Hagerman, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin College; her Master of Management degree in Management, Finance from Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management (1987-1989); her Master of Music degree from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University; and her Doctor of Music degree in Voice Performance from Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where she studied with Jean Deis, Gerhard Husch, Paul Matthen, John Wustman, Gianna D'Angelo and Helmuth Rilling.

Karen Hagerman served on the voice faculties of Virginia Tech and Meredith College. She then served on the faculty of the University of Alabama School of Music, where she taught Voice; French, Italian and German diction; and Vocal Literature. She also served as Opera Program Coordinator, managing all aspects of the University of Alabama Opera Theater: publicity, box office, sets, costumes, orchestra, and personnel. She also directed opera productions at the University of Alabama.

Karen Hagerman has taught singing at Rutgers University-Camden since 2003, and has maintained a private voice studio in Haddonfield, New Jersey since 1992. She also taught Consumer Behavior and Nonprofit Marketing courses in the School of Business at Rutgers-Camden from 2004 to 2012. She has served as Executive Director at the Haddonfield School of Performing Arts from 1992 to 2003, managing all aspects of the nonprofit community music school of approximately 650 students and 45 faculty. She tripled enrollment in three years; initiated and managed the Haddonfield Concert Series, a series of chamber music concerts, from 1992 to 2003; and wrote grant proposals for state, foundation and corporate grants.

Karen Hagerman is currently the Chair of the Rotary Club of Haddonfield Foundation, and has served on the Board of Trustees since 2001. The nonprofit organization provides charitable and educational grants to local, regional, and international organizations, furthering the causes of health, education, and peace. She currently lives in Haddonfield, New Jersey.
