Peter Gijsbertsen (Tenor)

Born: 1983 - Hardenberg, the Netherlands

The Dutch tenor, Peter Gijsbertsen, studied at the Conservatoire in Utrecht from 20012 to 2006 (vocal teacher Harry Peeters). He continues his studies with bass-baritone Harry Peeters and vocal coach Gilbert den Broeder (since 2005). In 2005 he attended 2005 the master-class acting for singers of the Jekerstudio Maastricht. Furthermore he had lessons with Cristina Deutekom and Betty Schuurman. Peter attended master-classes with the Samling Foundation led by Sir Thomas Allen after which he was asked to join a concert in the Wigmore Hall. In 2006 he was with the Resident Artists Programme of the Dutch Touring Opera. In 2007 Peter was the winner of the John Christie Award in Glyndebourne and jooined the understudy programme Glyndebourne (2007-2011).

In 2006 Peter Gijsbertsen made his debut in the Zaterdag Matinee (live radio broadcasts from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam) as Joe in Puccini’s La fanciulla del West by Puccini, followed by Le petit vieillard in L’enfant et les sortilèges by Ravel and Licone in Orlando Paladino by Haydn, 2nd tenor in Le chant sur la mort de Haydn by Cherubini and Strozzi and Cavaliere in Caterina Cornaro by Donizetti.

At Glyndebourne Peter Gijsbertsen has performed the roles of Liberto en Lucano in L’incoronazione di Poppea by Monteverdi. The 2008 production was also performed in the BBC Proms including a live radio broadcast and recorded for DVD. Other roles performed at Glyndebourne are Der Junge Seemann in Tristan und Isolde by Wagner and Maintop in Billy Budd by Benjamin Britten which also was recorded for DVD. In the understudy programme Peter covered the roles of Tamino in Die Zauberflöte by W.A. Mozart, Tom Rakewell in The Rake's progress by Igor Stravinsky and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni by W.A. Mozart. Furthermore Peter performed the roles of Tamino in Die Zauberfloete by W.A. Mozart (Opera Oviedo), Alméric in Tchaikovsky's Iolanta (London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Jurowski), Balthasar Zorn in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg by Wagner (Theater Kiel) and Gernando in Haydn's L'isola disabitata (Dutch Touring Opera).

In 2008 Peter Gijsbertsen made his recital debut with Gilbert den Broeder in the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam upon which they were asked to appear in the next season. For both years he was a nominee for the Grachtenfestivalprijs, a prize for outstanding young talent.

On the concert platform Peter Gijsbertsen has, among other works, performed the tenor arias in the St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach (Brabants Orkest), the tenor solo in I. Stravinsky's Pulcinella (Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra) and the tenor solo in Vigilia by Rautavaara (Groot Omroepkoor).

On the agenda are Giove/Eurimaco in Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria by Monteverdi (Opera Cologne), tenor solo in the St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach (Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra), Graf Albert in Die tote Stadt by Korngold (ABAO Bilbao), principal tenor in The Fairy Queen by Purcell and Novice in Billy Budd by B. Britten (Glyndebourne Opera Festival).
