Anna Devin (Soprano)

Born: Dublin, Ireland

The Irish soprano, Anna Devin, is an alumna of the Royal Opera House’s Jette Parker Young Artist programme, Royal Irish Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Britten-Pears YAP and the National Opera Studio. Her awards and honours include the Maggie Teyte and Miriam Licette Scholarships, Stuart Burrows International Voice Award, Singers’ Prize at the Gerald Moore Awards and the Audience Prize in the London Handel Singing Competition. She is also an Associate Artist with Classical Opera, with whom she records and performs regularly.

Anna Devin is widely admired for her “vivid sense of bel canto style,” (The Arts Desk), “vocal control…artistry and musico-dramatic intelligence,” (Opera News). She has performed on the operatic and concert stages throughout Europe and the USA. Recent highlights include her debuts with La Scala and the Wiener Philharmoniker; role and festival debut as Galatea in George Frideric Handel’s Acis and Galatea at Mozartwoche Salzburg; role debut as Nannetta at Covent Garden; Susanna with the Welsh National Opera; Michal in Glyndebourne Touring Opera’s production of Saul; appearances at the Festival Bach de Lausanne and with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra; and a concert tour performing Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate with frequent collaborator Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre. Her performance with Brisbane Baroque earned her the Best Supporting Singer in an Opera at the 2015 Helpmann Awards Australia.

Anna Devin has earned acclaim for her performances as the Governess in Benjamin Britten's Turn of the Screw, Countess Adele in Rossini’s Le Comte Ory, Marie in Fille du Regiment, Morgana, Suor Geniovieffa, Blumen Mädchen, Papagena, Gretel, Ilia and Semele, of which Geoff Brown writes in The Times that she sings, “with a voice as liquid and sparkling as the best champagne.”

A frequent concert performer, Anna Devin's repertoire encompasses a vast range of sacred and secular works and she has appeared at the BBC Proms; Carnegie Hall; London Handel, Göttingen Handel, Brighton Early Music and Belfast festivals; and with the Hallé Orchestra, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Houston Symphony Orchestra and Charlotte Symphony.

The 2016-2017 seasons will see Anna Devin's debut at Madrid’s Teatro Reale as Cecila in W.A. Mozart's Lucio Silla, singing Susanna in Scottish Opera’s production of W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, G.F. Handel’s Semele at the Karlsruhe Handel Festival and Helena in B. Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Aldeburgh Festival. She will also perform with The English Concert and at Wigmore Hall. In November 2017, she will also give a master-class at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

Recordings include W.A. Mozart's Tamiri in Il Re Pastore and Arbate in Mitridate with Classical Opera and G.F. Handel’s Faramondo, conducted by Laurence Cummings, live from Göttingen Händel Festival.

In addition to her work on stage, Anna Devin is proud to be an Ambassador for the British Dyslexia Association. She has also been open with the public through the media and events about growing up with dyslexia, saying: “Being different is not a bad thing. Not fitting in with the crowd is a blessing as we all have our own journey and being forced to find your own path brings originality.” When not on stage, she is a keen long-distance runner and yogi, she enjoys relaxing with her husband and Norwegian Forest Cat in their Bedfordshire, UK home. She currently lives in London, England.
