Richard Crist (Baritone)

Born: Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. USA

The American baritone, voice teacher and opera director, Richard Crist, obtained his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degre in Music Teacher Education from Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. (1966-1970); and his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston (1970-1972). He also studied at Curtis Institute.

Richard Crist has appeared as a guest artist with:opera companies across the USA: The Metropolitan Opera in New Yoirk City (Former Member, Principle Artist), Opera Company of Boston (Principle Guest Artist, 34 productions), Opera Philadelphia (Principle Guest Artist), San Francisco Opera (Principle Guest Artist), San Diego Opera (Principle Guest Artist), Opera Arkansas (General Director), Virginia Opera (Principle Artist), Opera Memphis (Principle Artist), Opera Mobile in Alabama (Principle Artist), Lyric Opera of Kansas City (Principle Artist), and operas of Santa Fe, Orlando, and Lake George. Abroad he has appeared with Wexford Festival Opera in Ireland (Principle Artist), Opéra National de Lyon in France (Principle Guest Artist), Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia (Principle Guest Artist), Edinburgh International Festival in the UK (Guest Artist, The English Cat by Henze), Dublin Grand Opera in Ireland (Principle Artist), Frankfurt alte Oper (Guest Artist, The English Cat" Henze), Hamburg State Opera in Germany (Former Member, Principle Artist). Opera performances include: Les Troyens with Opera Company of Boston's American Stage; George Frideric Handel's Messiah at the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall with Northwest Indiana Symphony. His 1983 performance of Pique Dame with Philadelphia Opera was filmed for the PBS-TV network.

Richard Crist has performed with such major orchestras as the American Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Denver Symphony, Kalamazoo Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington D.C.), New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, as well as with Musica sacra (New York City), Los Angeles Master Chorale (he Creation (Die Schöpfung, March 1985), Handel and Haydn Society (Boston), Washington Chamber Symphony; abroad with Orchestre de Lyon, Sverdlovsk Philharmonic, Radio Telefis Éireann Orchestra (Dublin, Ireland), Orquesta de Maracaibo (Maracaibo, Venezuela), North Deutsche Rundfunk, and City of London Sinfonia.

In the field of education, Richard Crist served as Professor of Voice at University of Oklahoma (August 2002-June 2005); and Artist Teacher of Vocie/Director of Opera Theater at Ohio University (July 2005-June 2011). He works as freelance Voice Teacher.Opera Director since June 1999. He has also been Artist in Residence at University of Arkansas Opera Theater in Fayetteville (Assistant to Sarah Caldwell), Adjunct Professor at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania (Voice Instruction), Adjunct Professor at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts (Voice instruction), Adjunt Professor at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania (Voice instruction). He currently lives in Athens, Ohio.
