Collegium St. Emmeram (Orchestra)

Founded: 1972 - Germany

The orchestra: The Collegium St. Emmeram (= CSE) came into being as a result of many years' close cooperation making records with the Regensburger Domspatzen. Every summer since 1972 a group of musicians from germany, Austria, England and Switzerland has congregated in Regensburg to play under Hanns-Martin Schneidt in the Church of St. Emmeram and to work on these recordings. All the musicians play genuine old instruments; the strings are tuned slightly lower (about half tone lower than normal) in the old scale, and cat gut strings are used. The leader since 1976 has been Spiros Rantos, one of Eduard Melkus' pupils. The organist, Gerd Kaufmann, is also organist to the Domspatzen.
