Martha Brickman (Harpsichord)

Born: Montreal, Canada

The Canadian harpsichordist, Martha Brickman, began studying the piano and oboe before taking up the harpsichord with Feruccio Vignanelli in Rome and then with Kenneth Gilbert in Montreal at the Conservatoire de Musique et d’Art Dramatique. She was the winner of three European prestigious harpsichord competitions in Bruges (Belgium), Paris and Munich. As a Canada Council grant recipient she participated in two films for the French radio network and performed in major networks in Europe and North America, including a performance in Carnegie hall.

One of Canada's foremost harpsichord players, Martha Brickman is known for her expressive interpretation of early music. Resident of Vancouver since 1987, she has performed for Vancouver’s Masterpiece Music, Early Music Vancouver, UBC’s Noon-Hour Concerts, Douglas College’s Noon-Hour Concerts, CBC’s Arts National and Westcoast Performance performance. She collaborated with renowned recorder player Horacio Franco in Mexico City and also performed the J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) there. As a member of the Trio Amalie she has been performing locally with cellist Laura Kramer and violinist Jenny Essers since 2004.

Martha Brickman teaches at the Vancouver Academy of Music where she annually presents workshops and masterclasses on historical performance practice.
